Diet Soda in the News

Hi everyone!  I've been pretty busy with classes lately, but I wanted to write a quick post regarding the recent news about diet soda.  Personally, I cut pop/soda out of my diet in high school due to the recommendations of my track coach.  I know a number of people who do drink soda though, and of these people, many choose to drink diet soda because it has fewer (well, zero to be precise) calories and sugar.  Seems like a smart choice, right?  Well, not really.

"Researchers at the American Stroke Association's International Stroke Conference 2011 conducted an experiment on this topic, and found that people who drink diet soda may have a much higher risk of vascular events compared to those who don't drink soda."  This information came from this article.  The Today Show also mentioned this study here

They do mention that diet soda, like anything, is fine in moderation.  I totally agree.  Feel free to share any thoughts you have regarding diet soda in the comments below.

  2. While I agree that it is a good idea to drink diet pop in moderation, I must say that the experiment referenced in your blog post is totally without scientific validity. It is a non-controlled study which lacked standardization of risk factors associated with stroke in the study participants (i.e. weight, overall diet, blood cholesterol levels, exercise/activity level, etc.) Additionally, the study participants self-reported their consumption of diet pop AND did not even record what type of diet pop they were consuming! There is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY this 'research' indicates any type of causal relationship between diet pop consumption and strokes/heart attack. Shame on "The Today Show" & "CNN" for scaring consumers with results from a poorly structured, non-repeatable & scientifically invalid study. Well-designed, controlled research must be conducted before any conclusions can be drawn between diet pop consumption & one's health risks.

  4. Hey Ashley,
Thanks for sharing the news on this topic. I haven't had soda in 4 years - I quit when I went to college - and I have been trying to convince friends and family who drink soda (especially diet) to STOP, but it's a hard thing to give up.
I have read a lot about diet sodas and artificial sweeteners, and in addition to all of the health risks just released in these studies, artificial sweeteners, and therefore diet drinks, also contain known carcinogens. Yikes!

  5. I know how it is with school...I've been so busy too! Thank you for sharing this with me. I don't drink diet soda, but my mom does. I think you can have it occasionally, but it certainly shouldn't be a regular part of your diet!
